Low-Carbon Investments in Canada

Reaching Canada’s climate change commitments made at COP21 in Paris will require incredible investments in low-carbon technologies, but are our investments bringing Canada closer to its target? In this deep-dive into the built environment, we find the suitability of low-carbon technologies depends on the fuel mix for heating as well as the carbon intensity of electricity generation. As a result, provinces differ in their low-carbon pathways and building technology needs. Following a review of eight impact investment players employing debt instruments, we find a mismatch in terms of investment allocation and low-carbon pathway in Canada. We conclude with an alternative investment thesis seeking debt-returns with greater emission reduction potential.
